ATHENS, OH – State Representative Debbie Phillips (D-Athens) today announced several key endorsements in her 2010 reelection campaign for the 92nd House district. The endorsements, ranging from the Ohio Nurses Association and Ohio Education Association to local Carpenters, Bricklayers and Sheet Metal workers unions, demonstrate the broad support her campaign is experiencing at all levels across the district.
“It has been a challenging time to serve at the Statehouse, but I feel like we are starting to make progress on the issues that matter most to Ohioans,” said Phillips. “After the 2009 budget, which decreased state spending for the first time in 40 years, it would have been easy for some of these organizations to endorse challengers who may make empty promises. But instead, they want to help send me back to the Statehouse so that my colleagues and I can continue to make smart investments in Ohio’s future while living within our means.”
Recent endorsements of Phillips’ campaign include the Ohio Nurses Association and the Ohio State Medical Association. Both organizations have an in-depth endorsement process including questionnaires, an analysis of voting records and in person interviews with state leaders and local healthcare professionals. As a member of the House Health Committee, Phillips has worked with both organizations to craft sensible policies that improve healthcare services for Ohioans.
Phillips is also honored to receive the endorsement of several education groups across the state, including the Ohio Education Association (OEA), the Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT) and the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE). Phillips played a key role in the historic education funding reform which was passed in the most recent budget. When fully implemented, Ohio will have a more equitable funding system which will benefit many students in southeastern Ohio school districts.
And working men and women from across the district have joined together to endorse Phillips for another term. Endorsements include the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the Service Employees International Union 1199 (SEIU 1199), Ohio Civil Service Employees Association (OCSEA), Ohio AFL-CIO and Ohio Council 8 (which includes local Boilermakers, Electrical Workers, Carpenters, Bricklayers, Sheet Metal Workers and more)
“I am honored to have the endorsement of many hard-working people in the district, both in the public and private sector, along with that of professional organizations from across the state. Their support helps provide momentum and encouragement in these remaining months of the campaign.”
The 2010 general election season is just getting underway. Many other state and local organizations are still in the endorsement review process and will announce their decisions in the coming weeks and months.
